Animal Jam is a children's television show created by John Derevlany (who also wrote most of the episodes) and produced by Jim Henson Television, HIT Entertainment and Discovery Kids which first aired on February 24, 2003.
Production[edit]
The show featured many innovations in puppet design and production from the Jim Henson Company. It aired on TLC for several years, and ran on Discovery Kids until 2006.
Characters[edit]
- Edi the Zebra (performed by Leslie Carrara-Rudolph) – The host of the show. Her favorite toy is Ginger the Jungle Slug and she has her own kind of dance called 'the scooch.' She gets the kids' attention to dance by saying 'zebra, ready, pose!' She has bright pink and yellow stripes and her mane changes in style in every episode. She is the master of 'Zebra Fu.'
- Waffle the Cow-Monkey (performed by Rickey Boyd) – The co-host of the show. Waffle is referred to as a Cow-Monkey because he is a monkey that dresses up as a cowboy. The nicknames he gives Edi are zebra girl, pumpkin seed (used in 'The Right Size for You'), and striped friend. He gets the kids' attention by saying 'Now listen up with your cow-monkey ears' and wiggles his ears on his own. He always likes to take on a challenge such as in 'The Not So Moving Episode', when Edi challenges him to a freezing contest to see who can play with Ginger the Jungle Slug for the day. He's the master of 'Cow-Monkey Kwan-Do.' He did a slide show in 'I Am Rain'.
- Bozark the Elephant (performed by David Maida) – A 7 ft. tall dancing elephant who is an Animal Jam Superstar. He once came in at the wrong time in 'I Am Rain.'
- DJ 1 the Panda (performed by John Kennedy) - One of the DJs on the show. He sings the songs for Bozark's dance numbers. His catch phrase is 'Oh, yeah'.
- DJ 2 the Koala (performed by John Tartaglia) – One of the DJs on the show. He makes sounds after Bozark's dance numbers and makes DJ 1 and DJ 3 look at him. He sat on a stack of books in 'The Right Size For You'
- DJ 3 the Leopard (performed by Andy Stone) – One of the DJs on the show. He walked the tightrope in 'Crouching Edi, Hidden Waffle' and he played the organ in 'Boo! Day'. He does the antics after songs in the show. He's the only DJ who can tickle himself.
- Pancake the Water Buffalo – Waffle's younger sister who appeared in the last three episodes.

Later appearances[edit]
- Pancake the Water Buffalo appears as 'Pancake Buffalo' in the Hannah Montana episode 'Hannah in the Street with Diamonds' performed by Victor Yerrid and voiced by Susie Geiser. Pancake is the beloved puppet star of the local Malibu kids series called 'The Pancake Buffalo Show.' When Hannah Montana receives a diamond on a Hollywood street modeled after the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she requests the location be moved due to overly-frequent business in the area and learns that the area her diamond was originally intended to be placed was given to Pancake Buffalo. When Miley attempts to ask the kindly puppeteer of Pancake named Cindy Merriwether (played by Edie McClurg) to switch diamonds, she only communicates (rudely) through Pancake and refuses. Hannah then schemes to switch Pancake's dismal Street Diamond location with Hannah Montana's by playing on the childhood nostalgic fondness of her show by Hollywood Parade of Street Diamonds Committee Chairman Randall Harrison (played by Michael Boatman). She is successful, but ultimately a porta-john is placed directly over the newly moved Diamond much to Miley's astonished joy. Pancake is later seen 'occupying' the stall and shooing away anyone who wishes to make use of it.
- The puppets for Waffle the Cow-Monkey, DJ 1, DJ 2, DJ 3, and Pancake the Water Buffalo made appearances in Puppet Up!
- Bozark the Elephant appeared in the movie Old Dogs. He alongside Scales the Dragon from the pilot to 'Little Mermaid's Island' and Beak and YesNo from the proposed show 'Muppetmobile' were seen as part of Jimmy Lunchbox's show.
- The puppet for Waffle the Cow-Monkey appeared in No, You Shut Up! and The Happytime Murders.

The Adopt a Pet Toys series is the largest, and most ambitious, toy line of Animal Jam. All of the toys are made by Jazwares Toys, and there are hundreds of pet toys that belong in these series, making it the largest collaboration between the two companies. Today, we are going to take a look at the different Adopt a Pet Toys series, and check out what each of them consists of.
There are a total of six Adopt a Pet Toys series, which are called as following:
- Adopt a Pet Series One: Dens & Blind Bags
- Adopt a Pet: Treasure Chest
- Adopt a Pet Series Two: Igloos
- Adopt a Pet Series Three: Cupcakes
- Adopt a Pet Eclipse Pets
- Adopt a Pet Series Four: Spring Cottage
Each of these series contain toys within different packaging, making them all rather exclusive. We will check in more detail what each package contains.
Adopt a Pet Series One: Dens & Blind Bags
This is the first ever series of Adopt a Pet Toys. As the name already suggests, they come in the shape of dens, or little cabins. Within those cabins, you will find a pet, an accessory, a small bowl, a checklist and a code. The checklist allows you to keep track of the pets that you have already obtained in this series.
The Pet Dens are mystery boxes. That means that you won’t be able to tell from the packaging what is inside of it. This means that you will not be able to tell which pet you will get before actually opening the package. The Pet Dens come in four colors:
- Green
- Orange
- Blue
- Pink
Some of them are coated with glitter, and have the colors blue, purple, pink and teal. Having a different color doesn’t seem to make a difference for the contents of that particular Pet Cabin.
There are a total of 96 different pets in Series One. As mentioned above, each of the different pets come with an unique code, which you can redeem on Animal Jam. This unlocks the pet on your Adopt a Pet Checklist, and rewards you with a unique gift. The checklist can be accessed by going to the Adopt a Pet Checklist menu in the game. The pets that come in Series One are also categories in rarity. There are a total of five rarities:
- Common
- Rare
- Gem
- Diamond
- Ultra Rare
AJHQ expanded Series One by adding Blind Bags alongside the already existing Dens. Blind Bags contain the same things as their Den equivalent, but also come with a free membership for one week.
The main difference between the Blind Bags and the Dens is that the Blind Bags come in small bags. You still can’t see which toy is inside of it, but they are still the same as the ones that you would find in a Series One Den.
Adopt a Pet: Treasure Chest
Due to the intense popularity of Series One, AJHQ decided to continue expanding the Adopt a Pet series. The Treasure Chest series was released directly after Series One. You might have already figured it out, but these came in the form of small Treasure Chests. Within them, you will find a pet, an accessory, a small bowl, a checklist and a code. It should also be noted that the Treasure Chest series were sold exclusively by Walmart.
Just like the Series One Dens and Blind Bags, the Treasure Chests are mystery boxes. This means that you can’t see which pet you will get beforehand. The Treasure Chests come in the following colors:
Animal Jam Series 4 Cottage 2017
- Blue
- Yellow
- Purple
- Pink
The pets in the Treasure Chest series continue the Series One pets, starting at 1-97, and there are a total of 96 of them. They are also categorized on their rarity, varying between common and ultra rare. It should be noted that there is only one Ultra Rare Pet in the Treasure Chest series.
The difference between the pets in Treasure Chest and Series One is that the ones in the Treasure Chest series already have a unique name given to them. The pets in Series One displayed their species name. The pets in the Treasure Chest series are also colored in stones, gems and jewelry colors, and most of them come with an Animal Coin accessory.
Adopt a Pet Series Two: Igloos
AJHQ continued the series by releasing Series Two of Adopt a Pet, which were in the shape of igloo houses. They resemble the Igloo Pet House, which you can find in Animal Jam. Within the igloo houses, you will find a pet, an accessory, a small bowl, a checklist and a code. They were either sold individually, or in a five pack.
Similar to the packages of the previous series, the igloos are mystery boxes. You will not be able to tell which pet you will get before opening the igloo. They come in the following colors:
- Purple
- Light Gray
- Pink
- Pale Blue
The Adopt a Pet Series Two: Igloos consists of a total of 106 pets. Jammers can keep track of their process by using their Adopt a Pet Checklist, which can be found in the game.
The pets in Series Two are also categorized on their rarity, ranging from common to ultra rare. A retail store in the UK, called The Entertainer, distributed ten igloos that contained the very rare and exclusive Glitter Pet. If you were one of the ten lucky ones to get that igloo, you were rewarded with 25 Diamonds, 6000 Gems and six months’ worth of Animal Jam membership.
Adopt a Pet Series Three: Cupcakes
Animal Jam Series 4 Cottage 2017
Series Three of the Adopt a Pet collection came in the form of Cupcakes. Within those Cupcakes, you will find a pet, an accessory, a checklist and a code. Similar to the Series Two Igloos, the Cupcakes were also sold individually, or as a five pack.
The Series Three Cupcakes are also mystery boxes, so you can’t see the contents. The bottom part and the frosting part of the Cupcakes were colored as following:
- Purple Frosting with Orange Bottom
- Orange Frosting with Yellow Bottom
- Orange Frosting with Purple Bottom
- Yellow Frosting with Green Bottom
- Pink Frosting with Orange Bottom
- Green Frosting with Pink Bottom
The Series Three Cupcakes has a total of 108 different pets, and are also categorized on their rarity, ranging from common to ultra rare. Jammers can keep track of their progress by going to the Adopt a Pet Checklist menu in Animal Jam.
Adopt a Pet: Eclipse Pets
In the summer of 2017, AJHQ released a new Adopt a Pet series, called Eclipse Pets. These were in the shape of small, glittery Dens, and contained a pet, an accessory, a checklist and a code. They were only sold for a very limited time, which made them incredibly rare after discontinuing them.
Just like previous series, the Eclipse Dens are mystery boxes, and their contents can’t be seen before opening them. They only came in two colors: Yellow Sparkle and Blue Sparkle.
There are a total of 24 pets that can be found in the Eclipse Pets series. Just like in the Treasure Chest series, there is only one Ultra Rare pet in the Eclipse Pets series.
A difference between the Eclipse Pets series and other series is that the codes in the Eclipse Pets series give you in-game items, instead of pets. This also counts for the Ultra Rare pet in the Eclipse Pets series. The Pet toys are supposed to resemble the sun and moon, coming in only two colors: Glittery Yellow and Glittery Blue. All of the pets in this series come with a silver accessory.
Adopt a Pet Series Four: Spring Cottage
The latest series of Adopt a Pet toys is Series Four: Spring Cottage. The toys are packaged in small houses, which look like cottages, and resemble the Spring Cottage Den in Animal Jam.
The Spring Cottages are mystery boxes as well. Each of them has a different color of its roof and bottom part, just like the Series Three Cupcakes.
Adopt a Pet Series Four has a total of 104 pets, all of which comes with an exclusive code. The pets are also categories on their rarity, ranging between common and ultra rare.
